This is the reality in which we are helping:
children and youth who frequently experience violence and criminality early in their daily lives, who see no perspective of “breaking out of the hopeless favela reality”, who are certain that they have no real opportunity in life due to their background and therefore also see no sense in a commitment to school. Children who have learned that those who have the right of strength and illegality usually get the most in the end...

The project, “Do sports, win in life” changes the situation of the children in the Favela: “If we want to relate to the children here, it only works with sports, i.e. football. If we then manage to win the trust of the children, then we can really reach them”

“Who can still remember the German visitors?”
None of the children really believed the promise from 2016, “We’ll be back - and continue to support you!”
Having a life influenced by a great lack of perspective and disappointments means that they no longer believe, no longer trust...
Even our arrival gave the children of the project lots of optimism.
Personally, without detours, without administrative costs - We are there, we hand over donations personally, we check progress and plan the next steps on site, with street workers and children.
Targeted, direct, personal, transparent.
...not to be taken for granted, but absolutely mandatory for the children’s health. We would like to finance drinking water dispensers with a filter system and the related equipment in order to provide for the children of the project. In addition, reusable and hygienic drinking water bottles are needed that the children can fill up with water.
The installation and the maintenance of the system is done by a tradesman of the favela; therefore we are also creating an employment opportunity for a resident and supporter of the project.
...once or twice a week must be possible! A picnic bag with healthy and balanced contents costs the equivalent of about €1.12, which is distributed by the volunteers on their visits. Eagerly awaited and gratefully accepted. Therefore, for this need, we have to continually collect donations in order to provide the children and youth with regular fruit, cereals and vitamins.
...actually legally available in Brazil - but the children and families of the Favela “have other concerns”. Health and well-being, care and prevention - the children are often left completely alone in this area. And often there are also topics such as a visit to a gynaecologist, for example, about which the youth do not talk to their parents out of fear or shame, and hence urgently needed visits to doctors do not take place.
We would like to have a local medical assistant who gives first aid, checks the children’s health and organises care.
...an unnecessary luxury good? Not for the children of the project! The game of football on the glowing, hot cement ground is more than a game here. The sport in the community teaches them the basics of getting along with each other: respect, following rules, team spirit, fair play, playing matches without violence. They learn things for life here. The sport is the key, the opportunity to inspire the children for the project.
Regular football training with “real” jerseys and often the first sports shoes in their lives is what draws the children to the project. The shoes are a motivation for the courage to change something.
... there really wasn’t one before. A building was provided in the favela for the project. The children meet here for activities, to learn, to converse and it is their “safe haven” at the same time. Until recently, there was no waterproof roof over the concrete structure, the water collected in a type of concrete trough and the entire building was extremely damp and mouldy.
We provided money to build the roof and for the renovation. But now things can move ahead: a reliable supply of electricity, among other things for computer lessons, lights, air conditioning, WCs and showers.
...are much more than just a T-shirt for the children and the organisers. Belonging to the project makes the children proud. Therefore, a feeling of community arises and being together on one level without jealousy.
And, the children naturally “advertise” the project within the favela. Our goal is naturally to reach many more children.
We have bought jerseys for all the children of the project. Due to the growth of the children and for other new children in the project, there is a regular need here that we would like to finance.
...most of the children have no shoes except for flip-flops. Certainly no sports shoes. The game of football on the glowing, hot cement ground is more than a game here. The sport in the community teaches them the basics of getting along with each other: respect, following rules, team spirit, fair play, playing matches without violence.
In 2017, we were able to finance 120 pairs of football shoes for the project.

...on our first visit, we looked at the only, old atlas together with the children to see where Germany is: there was only West and East Germany. There were no pens, paper and books, no functional chairs and tables and a fan.
We have already been able to take care of all of these items by the purchases. However, there is lots of potential here to support and promote their drive and willingness to learn. Education is an important key for the vision of getting out of the miserable district. The project generates confidence and the belief in a real chance in life.
